Setting Up Your Workshop

Tips for making life in the workshop easier

Need a lamp to get light where it is needed? Try this:

Take one of those cantilever/spring arm desk lamps (with a funnel-shaped reflector) mount it 40" high on a pipe welded to the caster base from an old office chair. Run the wiring inside the pipe, remembering to use grommets where the wiring runs through metal.

Beyond that, you can weld a duplex box to the side of the pipe. This will allow you to plug a trouble light, drill etc into the lamp base and eliminate the need for an additional extension cord (don't over load the power cord/ mains plug). This a great combination for working under the hood of just about any vehicle.

Clutch Alignment Tool

Clutch-to-crankshaft alignment can be frustrating and time-consuming. While you can buy a tool to assist, why not make your own? Take a deep socket that fits the crankshaft pilot hole and wrap electrical tape on the socket until it just about contacts the splines on the clutch center hole. This method is very accurate for minimal cost.
