Corvette 1953-62

red by linewhite

Powered by a tuned 235cid, inline OHV six, this sports car used the venerable two speed powerglide auto. In this form it was capable of 161 km/h. Handling was just passable, while the body allowed the ingress of water and dust. In its first year, only 300 examples were built, rising to 3640 cars the following year. For 55 came the corporate 'egg crate' grille, along with a new 265cid OHV V8, boosting top speed to 196km/h. later that year, a manual transmission was optional later that year, with 80 percent of buyers going that way.

For 56 the body was revised with concave side panels added from the LaSalle II and Biscayne show cars. The V8 was stroked to 283cid. The following year Rochester fuel injection was optional. It lacked reliability and only 240 'fuelies' were built.

Quad headlamps were added in 58. In 61 came a new grille, and a Stingray style tail. The scooped sides were deemphasised. In 62 came the classic 327cid small block, claiming 241km/h for the little two seater.
